These Walls Must Fall nominated for SMK National Campaigners Awards 2024

News | These Walls Must Fall

These Walls Must Fall, our lived-experience migration justice campaigning network, has been nominated for the prestigious SMK National Campaigners Awards 2024, under its Amplifying Voices category.

Formed in 2018, These Walls Must Fall has worked with local friends and allies to build a community of radical solidarity, that helps them to survive, to thrive, and to organise for change.

The last few weeks have been particularly harrowing for people caught up in the UK’s hostile asylum and immigration system and the migration justice movement. As soon as the Home Office began the operation to detain people from our communities to put them onto the controversial flight to Rwanda, These Walls Must Fall campaigners sprang into action to reassert the culture of solidarity: they organised solidarity presence outside the immigration reporting centres in Manchester and Liverpool, and co-led, on 3 May, a solidarity gathering in Manchester’s main square which followed a spontaneous protest march to the Immigration Tribunal Building.

The SMK citation says:

Right to Remain supports groups of lived-experience campaigners to organise in their local communities, getting involved in alliances, networks, and campaigns. Members speak from direct experience at events, meetings, and protests, demanding change and rallying others to the movement. Many These Walls Must Fall campaigners are also still fighting for their individual rights, fighting for their own right to remain, living under the hostile environment. They know the nature of the problem better than anyone else. When they speak, people listen.

Maggy Moyo, our These Walls Must Fall Organiser, said:

We are deeply honoured to be nominated by SMK for this prestigious award. This recognition speaks volumes about the dedication and resilience of our incredible team. Amidst challenges, they stand as fighters, amplifying the voices of those impacted by the system. Thank you for this humbling acknowledgement.’

At Right to Remain, we are tremendously proud of all that our These Walls Must Fall campaigners do. Their grace and power inspire us to continue our work, building knowledge, radical solidarity, and power.
