On Saturday the 19th, hundreds of us gathered in County Durham as a show of solidarity with the women inside Derwentside immigration Removal and to call for an end to immigration detention.

The BBC North East attended the demonstration on Saturday, interviewing Maggy Moyo, our These Walls Must Fall Organiser and Emma Pearson, of the No To Hassockfield campaign group.

Maggy spoke to BBC about the importance of the demonstration, specifically for the women inside the centre, that the demonstration was a show of support for them.

“One of our members who was detained a few years ago told us that there was a protest outside, and they could hear them (the demonstrators) banging pots and making noise, and gave her hope.”

The demo was also covered by North East Bylines, accompanied by one of the powerful photos of Maggy taken by Simone Rudolphi.

We will be publishing our own reflections of the demo next week.

In solidarity,
