Family Reunion is a Right, Not a Privilege: Online Solidarity Session, 24 September 2025

Events | News

On 1 September 2025, the then Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, announced a pause on new applications under the refugee family reunion route. The government said this is a temporary stop while it designs new rules planned for Spring 2026. The route was suspended only three days later, on 4 September 2025.

This came as a complete surprise and shock to our community. It created a lot of confusion as people were frantically seeking accurate information and immediate help from each other. Those who were able to did their best to submit their applications before the suspension began. Some missed the 4 September deadline by a matter of minutes. Many refugees, who were preparing to bring their family members to join them in the UK, now have to consider an alternative route, or wait in uncertainty to find out what the new rules are.

We are hosting an online meeting on 24 September, between 10.30am and 12.00pm. This online Solidarity Session is organised by These Walls Must Fall and Right to Remain. In their statement, These Walls Must Fall said:

It has never been easy for newly recognised refugees, especially for parents separated from their children and spouses torn apart. Yet the sudden suspension of the rule has slammed the door in our faces, and left us in yet another cruel uncertainty.

We need to come together to support and help each other. This Solidarity Session is aimed at people who are affected by this suspension and those who are standing in solidarity with them. We will hold space to share our reactions and experiences, go over basic legal information about the suspension, look at the alternative routes together, and discuss how we can mutually support each other.

We are currently confirming the speakers and we will announce the line-up shortly. Please note that Right to Remain cannot and does not give legal advice to individuals

We look forward to seeing you on 24 September.
