Across the UK, thousands of people are detained every day in immigration detention centres, prison-like facilities where people are locked up not for any crime, but simply because they don’t have the “right” passport or visa, or because they sought protection.
People are held for indefinite periods, often not knowing when they’ll be released. Many suffer in isolation, facing severe trauma and long-lasting harm to their mental health. This system is violent, unjust, and entirely avoidable.
And yet, instead of ending detention, the UK government is expanding the detention estate.
On 18 October, we are organising the National Day of Solidarity to End Immigration Detention.
Along with No 2 Hassockfield, we will travel to Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre for a demonstration outside the centre, to show the women inside that we stand with them. We are also calling on communities to organise their own shows of solidarity wherever they are in the UK: vigils, marches, creative protests or community events, to reflect the local voices and energy of each area. The goal is simple but urgent: to show mass, visible opposition to immigration detention and build pressure for real change.
On Wednesday 17 September, between 7pm – 8.30pm, we will come together for an Online Rally to prepare for the day of solidarity on 18 October. This will be a vital space to connect, mobilise, and prepare for the nationwide actions to follow. The rally will include space to:
- Share ideas and plans for the National Day of Solidarity
- Connect with others organising in your area or across the country
- Ask questions and get practical support
- Hear from guest speakers (line up tbc)
- Build energy and collective power for what’s ahead!
Whether you’re an experienced organiser or completely new to this, the online rally is open to everyone.
Next steps
- Register below for the online rally on 17 September
- Start a conversation in your local community about planning an event on 18 October
- Fill in the Google Form with your ideas and contact details, if you would like to be connected with others
- Spread the word on social media and through your networks
If you have any questions, please contact esther@righttoremain.org.uk or No2hassockfield@outlook.com.
Together, we will stand in solidarity with those harmed by the detention system, amplify the call to shut down detention centres, and demand a future rooted in care, not cages.
