Strategies for Survival, Recipes for Resistance

Migrant Artists Mutual Aid was founded in 2011. They are a cross-national network of women, mothers, migrants, artists, academics and activists who work together to support members of their group who are seeking sanctuary, and campaign for justice in the migration system.

From the beginning they have produced events to raise legal fighting funds for women and children seeking sanctuary in the UK. They have fought the forced removals of some of their members and engaged in media campaigns for asylum protection for gender-based violence.

Their cross-national choir sings regularly at venues across Liverpool. MaMa says that “singing together makes all of us stronger and through it we hope to share our friendship with those who hear our voices raised together.”

MaMa have released a book, which explains some of the challenges that their members have experienced seeking asylum in the North West of England. Using photographs, poetry and personal reflection, this book not only shows the many hurdles, but the strategies they take to survive through collective action and mutual aid.

Containing stories, songs, and recipes (including the famous ‘1000 Chapatis Challenge’), all proceeds of this book will go toward the MaMa legal fund. Their aim is to ensure all women have representation at immigration tribunals, so that no one is forced to face state representatives alone.
