Our national demonstration to end immigration detention outside Derwentiside Immigration Detention Centre was a huge success! We celebrated our collective strength of solidarity and care, amidst the increasingly hostile environment. This was part of our National Day of Solidarity to End Immigration Detention.

Over  200 people from Manchester, Liverpool, Durham, Newcastle, Sheffield, and also further afield such as Cardiff, Oxford and London showed up on the day.  Alongside, co-organisers The No to Hassockfield Campaign and These Walls Must Fall, other activists and supporters took part at the demonstration from South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group, 4 Wings, Voice of Voiceless Immigration Detainees, Solidarity Knows No Borders, Refugee Action, WERS, Keep Campsfield Closed, Amnesty North East and Sheffield STAR (and many more! If you were there, let us know!) This is down to the strength of our community of supporters, both those activists who made it on the day to the demo and those who held local events and our online community who contributed to our #DignityNotDetention digital campaign.

We owe you an enormous debt of thanks to the amaxing No To Hassockfield Campaign group who worked with us for months to prepare for the demo and cared for us throughout the day. Dr Helen Groom from the No to Hassockfield campaign, said: “The protest was vibrant, peaceful and loud: we made sure that the women imprisoned in Derwentside know that they are not forgotten.

Our migration justice movement continues, and we need your help to grow our solidarity. Can you help?

  1. Consider making a donation so Right to Remain can continue our work to bring knowledge, radical solidarity and power to our communities to challenge the injustice of the asylum and immigration system. A regular monthly payment is the best way to support us financially. For small organisations like us, it really helps for us to know we can carry on doing our vital work – and even do more.
  1. Continue to share Right to Remain media posts. The more you can amplify the messages, the more impact we can have. And tell other people about us!
  1. We are planning to launch a new Knowledge is Power online workshop on reporting and detention. If you are interested in knowing more about it, you can register your interest here. Knowledge is Power: Immigration Enforcement and Detention, online workshops 2025/2026 – Right to Remain You can also stay in touch with us by signing up to our newsletter

We will be sharing more stories from the demo in due course.

In solidarity always,

Right to Remain Team
